Below is a chart compiled by Brent Ayer, former Head Coach at Hood and former president of the RRCA. All research credit here goes to Mr. Ayer.

Putting on a state meet this year presented many challenges, and finding a location with as many dates as necessary was quite the task. Then following any other parameters set by the Armory certainly added another layer of challenges. While the Armory may not be the greatest venue in America, it was a great place to be. The MPSSAA could have very easily passed over the meet, but they worked hard to put on a meet.
Below is a chart, followed by individual schools, that details how many unused entries there were for each region. Going into the meet, 14 was obviously a very small number of entries. That possibly was limited by any number set by the Armory, but that is speculation. In prior years, the 1A/2A meet is nowhere near the size of the 3A/4A meet, so the entries could have been distributed differently.
While it was no easy feat to pull off this meet, any unused capacity could have been redistributed to other teams that would have used seeds. If you have entries due one week ahead of time, then you can seed then reopen entries. Let’s take 3A Central Boys. There were 39 unused entries with 16 teams. Every team can now have 2 more entries.
Seeding should have been allowed at the meet. It’s understandable as to why to ensure an even playing field, but there were individuals at their regional meet who won their heat by quite a bit, but these athletes were unable to go through to the state meet because they were unlucky.
Lastly, as a coach you got 14 free entries. There was no top 24 with which to be concerned. Why wouldn’t you put your kids in the regional meet?
