After the state meet was shuffled around at the end of this past indoor season, the MPSSAA and Baltimore Armory have come to an agreement to keep the Indoor Track and Field State Championship at the Armory for the next five years. PG Sports and Learning Complex served as the host site for the indoor state meet for the twenty years prior, but since PGSLC was being used as a vaccination site this past winter, the state meet was moved to the Armory at the last minute.
For most coaches and athletes, it was not a welcome move, but the MPSSAA was determined to run a championship. The MPSSAA cited the Armory as a reliable and central location to all schools in the state.
Jason Andrews, Executive Director of Events for the MPSSAA, said, “We know a lot of coaches weren’t enthused about racing at the Armory, but we were very pleased with how the meet turned out. Athletes stepped up and there were many great performances.”
He followed that up with, “We can’t predict the future with Covid variants or anything else [proposed construction at PGSLC], so we felt based on this past year, we can assure athletes will have a place to have their championship meet.”
In the past, 1A and 2A competed on President’s day and 3A and 4A competed the following day, but the state plans to keep the four day format used this past season. Spectators will be allowed on the second floor side east side each day with a cap of 500. All ticket sales will be available for purchase online through GoFan.
Regionals will be determined season by season, but as long as PGSLC is operational, it can host in-season meets and regionals if necessary.
