Details on State Championship

The MPSSAA approved a state championship for all spring sports.  The post season begins June 5 (track appears to start June 7) with the state championship meet being held June 18 and June 19.

Typically there is a county championship, regional championship, and state championship.  In this year’s iteration, regionals will be broken into sectionals, with the largest section being no more than 8 schools.  Effectively, the sections are the region broken in half.  For example, 4A East typically has 11 schools.  Now that region is broken into 2 sectionals, one that is 6 schools and the other sectional being 5 schools.

Within each sectional, a school can enter 2 athletes per event and 1 relay.  Within each event, 4 runners advance to the regional round.  Once the region is combined, only 2 runners will advance to the state championship.  As there are north, south, east, and west regionals, this creates an 8 person final at the state meet.

Assuming regions are run on an 8 lane track, this means each region meet and the state meet will have events only run as one heat finals.  No time qualifications will be used for entry purposes or advancement purposes.

More information can be found in the state bulletin.
