After a very successful freshman season at Goucher, Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw is set to take on the Under 20 championships in Eugene, Oregon this week. While only running for a club team in high school, Tanise has moved from local to national very quickly. This coming Friday, Tanise will compete in both the 1500 and 800 at Hayward Field.
Leading up to this meet, Tanise had a very strong first year at Goucher. Indoors, she set three school records in the 600, 800, and 1000. She qualified for nationals in the 800, where she finished 20th, giving Tanise her first experience of national competition. She continued to progress, and during the outdoor season, she set three more school records in the 400, 800, and 1500. Tanise once again qualified for the 800 at nationals, where she finished 21st.
Coming out of high school, her personal best in the 800 was 2:24 while her personal best in the 1500 was 5:17. Both of these times she has drastically lowered, and that is through her hard work and commitment.
Tanise qualified for the Under 20 Championships 1500 by virtue of her time at the Landmark Conference Championships. Then she learned this past Friday that she also qualified in the 800, based on her time also run at the Landmark Conference Championships.
On her performance this season, Associate Head Coach JT Klopcic notes, “It has been really fun to watch Tanise grow and develop as a student-athlete here at Goucher. She has made tremendous progress in her understanding of advanced training concepts and race strategy. With the way she prepares for daily training and competition it is not a surprise she has had a successful first year. A big credit goes to Coach Camodeca, our athletic and institutional administrators, and the infrastructure he has put in place to allow student-athletes to be successful like Tanise in the short time he has been back at Goucher.”
