Josh Carroll, longtime South River Coach, retires from coaching

After a twenty plus year coaching career in Anne Arundel County, Josh Carroll has stepped away from his coaching duties. Here he reflects on both his time as coach over the years and his growth as a coach over the years. He has very good advice for coaches out there looking to build a strong program.

Carroll began his coaching career at Glen Burnie in 2000 and in 2007 he moved on to South River.  While South River was an established program, Coach Carroll certainly helped to move the program forward as they saw much success over the past decade.

A few memories from his career include:  Brent Mussleman setting the Anne Arundel County record in the outdoor 1600, the girls’ indoor state championship in 2014 and their runner up performance in 2015;  the individual state championship for Brownyn Patterson at Hereford in 2018; and the individual state championship for Sam Keeny at Hereford in 2019.

In this interview, Coach Carroll talks about the start of his coaching career, some challenges he had at the start, and developing effective practices to really let his athletes grow.  For coaches looking to build their program, Coach Carroll has great observations.
