T&FN Guide To The 2022 World Championships

Day 0 Takeaways

Driving into Eugene, it was not really clear there was a world, global, international event that was about to take place.  There were some signs along the bridge, but other than that there was nothing to indicate there was a ten day global championship upcoming.  Furthermore, while Eugene is a very nice place, every other Diamond League Meet takes place in large European cities.

Day 1 Takeaways

There was a strong crowd in the evening session.  There was a nice opening ceremony, and Seb Coe seems committed to making track work in the U.S.  He is a track guy seems to “get it.”  The flyover was unexpected (maybe unnecessary).

It was interesting and cool to see all the international flavor.  Most likely, the foreign athletes can speak 2-3 languages and Americans don’t know the difference between to, too, and two.

Day 2 takeaways

The stadium was largely full and the crowd was into it.  When the Jamaican sprinters were introduced it felt like being at Camden Yards when the Yankees were in town.  But when the U.S. swept, it was very loud with hometown pride inside the stadium.  Kerley and Bromell seem to have overcome some obstacles so even better for them.  It did seem slightly odd with the lack of award ceremony.  Fred Kerley received his medal then did a victory lap without his teammates.  As the three medalist ultimately converged, the World Championships workers began to bring out the podium, though the athletes never stepped onto the podium.  It seemed disorganized to give the athletes their medals immediately then expect them to come back to the podium, which was not initially set up.

Day 4 Track

Day 4 Takeaways

Only 41 women lined up for the marathon, and only 32 completed the marathon. 63 men were on the startlist, and 54 finished the marathon.  I understand there can only be a limited number on the track, but there seems to be no reason we can’t add more participants.

1500 was very fast-went out in 55.

Day 5 Takeaways

Attendance Thus far

-Attendance has been holding strong.

https://www.oregonlive.com/oregon22/2022/07/world-athletics-championships-attendance-tops-54000-in-first-three-days.html?fbclid=IwAR1uZeMSsf5XYT4-2wuN13fhZ7dym0rBqqcGF_KHaWWchAI3ZBJuV2ox0Kg

High Jump-great competition-everyone in stadium cheered on all competitors

Day 6

Did not attend

Day 7 Pictures

Day 7 Takeaways

-Is Noah Lyles a jerk-if he is, then what would you call a football player who does a dance after a touchdown or sack/Is Lyles wearing super shoes?/19.31 to 19.19 WR?-haven’t looked at video-I wonder where he can gain .12, but more than likely this was a perfect race/this should set up Lyles for a 400 transition later in career if he wants to extend career/Knighton will catch Lyles soon-Knighton may be future WRH

-Crowd seemed smaller this evening-certain sections appeared almost empty-so how many of these seats are athletes and family-now that athletes and families are starting to leave, will the numbers continue to decrease/is the appearance of some sold out days earlier due to more athletes/families being in attendance

-How does Kincaid not get advanced to the final-everyone else pouts on the track, but he got up and ran 13:24-first non-qualifier?

Day 8 Takeaways

-Appeared to be a mostly full stadium.  Supportive of all events.

-Vendors aren’t allowed to do branding.  Is that a US thing?  Paying all that money and you can’t do branding?  Concessions are very expensive.

-Sydney McLaughlin’s performance has to be one of the best performances of all time.  She would have been 7th in the 400.  Sydney probably made close to 500k from this performance.

Day 9 Pictures

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.587615169701072&type=3

Day 9 Takeaways

Story on local news about “Where are all the homeless people?”  Why are ‘homeless people’ a stain on society?  We are the richest society ever in history and during events we put ‘these people’ in hotels or even permanent residences.  When are we going to do better as a society?

800-no one actually ever runs the shortest line from the 100 to 200

Running multiple races-Allyson Felix flew back to Eugene to run the prelims of the 4×4 (which is ridiculous-she should have been in Eugene the entire time doing press-USATF issue).  Femke Bol ran the mixed relay 4×4, heats of the hurdles, and 4×4 trials; decathletes do 10 events (why do the women still do the hep?), but kids we coach cry about running a 400.

No presence of USATF except for the Italian restaurant they have rented out for a ‘private event.’

Why can’t the relays go around the track together.  The German team went around together, but for the US it was Steiner/Prandini and Jefferson/Terry going around together and for the men, only Coleman went around (?).

Tigray-wasn’t aware of what Tigray was until today, but there were individuals from Tigray passing out pamplets; they were also audible before the start of events; a guy came out after the 5k.  Sport and protest-always an interesting combo

From Day 6, but Michael Johnson has some good points.

Day 10 Pictures

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.588247116304544&type=3

Day 10 Takeaways

-Keely made the right move in the 800.  Most times the lead runner drifts out and the trailing runner can pass.  Mu held the line, though she was quickly giving up ground to third holding off Hodgkinson.

-Mondo is insane-  Great front flip on the track after setting the WR.

-Women’s 110 h-Great run (s) by Amusen.  Should the women’s hurdles be raised?

-Strong, enthusiastic crowd.  Over 10 days, did 200,000 people attend or did 20,000 people attend?
